Keto Eats: What I eat on the Keto Diet and How it Works for Me

Hey y’all! I’m so excited to be posting this for y’all! This was a highly requested blog post on my Instagram stories and I always get asked about what I eat on the Keto diet and how it works for me. To me the Keto diet is more of a way of living versus a “diet”. In order to be successful on the Keto diet you first need to have a basic understanding of what it is. The Keto diet is a low carb, low sugar, and high protein diet. I personally eat around 50 carbs max per day and eat foods with 5 grams of sugar or less. When I first started the Keto diet I weighed about 130 pounds and I now weigh 110 pounds. This diet really does work if you follow it right and know what to eat and what to stay away from! I also used to take naps daily and now I can’t even get myself to nap no matter how hard I try because the Keto diet gives me lots of energy. The Keto diet also has a lot of health benefits such as low cholesterol, as well as can help with diabetes for individuals that have it. Now let’s dive in on the basics.

The first food group that I’m going to talk about is fruit. Most of us think that fruit is healthy because thats what we’ve always been told. However, fruit has a ton of sugars as well as carbs in it which was very shocking to me! Therefore, on the Keto diet you can eat berries and apples only. I usually eat berries plain or put them on top of my greek yogurt or eat them with full fat, low sugar whipped cream.

Dairy Products– On the Keto diet you are supposed to eat full fat foods because low fat foods have lots of added sugars in them! Therefore, making you able to eat full fat cheese, greek yogurt, heavy whipping cream (used in lots of recipes) that are Keto friendly as well as unsweetened almond milk. Basically anything that is full fat dairy you can eat!

Meat- On the Keto diet you will find yourself eating lots of meat because you can eat any meat that you want except for processed and packaged meat, otherwise known as “lunch meat”.  My favorite thing to eat on the Keto diet is bacon! Yes you can eat bacon because it is low carb and low sugars as well as high in fat. Just make sure that the bacon is “uncurred”.

Vegetables- You want to stay away from any vegetables that are starchy such as potatoes as well as carrots because these are literally loaded with carbs! Vegetables that you should eat are anything green as well as squash.

Other random things- Other random things you can eat that are Keto friendly are mayo, mustard, avocados, stevia sweetener as well as dark chocolate with a higher percent of cacoa in it! My favorite Keto friendly dark chocolate is Lily’s chocolate chips. You can buy them at Whole Foods or HEB. Amazon as well has them for a discounted price.

So what do I eat on the Keto diet?

For Breakfast- For breakfast I will have scrambled eggs with full fat cheese shredded on top with a side of bacon. Another breakfast meal I will have is an omelet with tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese and garnish it with cilantro or parsley. You can also make Keto friendly waffles which taste really good! All my Keto recipes are on my Pinterest account under Keto Diet Cookbook. I also drink coffee every morning with stevia sweetener and sugar free cream!

For Lunch- For lunch I will have a salad with cucumbers, berries, and or apples on it. You can also add cheese if you would like. Lettuce Wraps are another good thing to eat. I basically make a BLT substituting the bread with lettuce for a low carb option.

For Dinner- For dinner I’ll grill some chicken paired with broccoli and cheese and or squash. I also will switch my meals off between chicken and fish as well as with broccoli or squash that way I am not eating the same thing every night. Again, I have so many recipes linked on my Pinterest account that I have found from food bloggers.

Overall, the Keto diet is very simple, but it can be a bit tricky at first as you are trying to learn what to eat and what not to eat. My best suggestion is to look at labels! Anything with sugars over 5-7 grams you should stay away from as well as anything over 10 total carbs. There are lots of books on the Keto Diet if you would like to learn more about exactly how it works and what to eat and what not to eat that you can purchase on Amazon or Barnes and Nobles.
